In accordance with UK law, any precious metal item that exceeds the following weight thresholds must bear an official hallmark, applied by an assay office recognised by the British Hallmarking Council:

• Gold — items exceeding 1 gram
• Silver — items exceeding 7.78 grams
• Platinum — items exceeding 0.5 grams
