Understanding the 4Cs of Diamond Quality

Familiarising yourself with the 4Cs is the finest way to truly appreciate what sets one diamond apart from another — and to ensure every piece you choose reflects the quality it deserves.

Diamond Colour

In most diamonds, colour is best understood by its absence. The less colour present within the stone, the rarer and more desirable it becomes. While subtle differences may not always be perceptible to the naked eye, they have a meaningful influence on both the quality and value of the diamond.

Diamond Clarity

Clarity evaluates the nature, size, and placement of a diamond’s internal characteristics — known as inclusions — and any external surface marks, referred to as blemishes. Grades range from Flawless, where imperfections are virtually imperceptible, through to Included, where they are more readily apparent and may affect the stone’s brilliance.

Diamond Cut

Cut speaks not to the shape of a diamond, but to the precision of its proportions, the arrangement of its facets, and the mastery of its craftsmanship. It is the cut that breathes life into a diamond — determining its brilliance, sparkle, and fire. Grades range from Excellent, representing the pinnacle of light performance, to Poor.

Diamond Carat

Carat is a measure of a diamond’s weight, and as a general rule, a higher carat weight commands a higher price. However, carat alone does not define value. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can differ considerably in quality and cost when the remaining three Cs are taken into consideration — a reminder that true excellence lies in the harmony of all four.
